Enhancing Qatar's Road Network

Project Overview:

Crown Consult, was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport (MOT) of Qatar to conduct a comprehensive International Road Assessment Program (iRAP) evaluation of the country's road network. This ambitious project, spanning over 2,200 kilometers of roads, aimed to:

  • Improve road safety: by identifying and addressing potential risks for all road users.
  • Develop data-driven investment strategies: by establishing benchmarks and risk maps to prioritize road improvement programs.
  • Strengthen data management: by creating a secure, GIS-based crash data system for informed decision-making.

Promote innovation: by introducing digital survey and analysis tools, mobile crash site investigation applications, and advanced iRAP coding tools for 3D road designs.

Highlights:

  • Extensive evaluation: Over 2,200 kilometers of roads were assessed using the iRAP methodology, ensuring a thorough and accurate evaluation of Qatar's road safety performance.
  • Sophisticated data collection: Crown Consult deployed cutting-edge surveying equipment to elevate the quality and reliability of the iRAP star rating process.
  • Benchmarking and risk mapping: The project established benchmarks for different road types and developed empirically validated risk maps to guide future investment decisions.
  • Digital innovation: Two innovative tablet applications were developed; one for ensuring roadworks compliance with safety standards and another for crash site investigation and data collection.
  • Robust data management: A secure GIS-based crash data system was created to provide comprehensive analytical, reporting, and decision support tools.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement: Extensive collaboration was established with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Interior, Hamad Medical Corporation, Public Works Authority, and Qatar University.

Outcomes and Impact:

  • Provided a comprehensive assessment of road safety risks across the country.
  • Established data-driven benchmarks and risk maps to inform future road improvement programs.
  • Improved data management capabilities through the development of a robust crash data system.
  • Fostered innovation through the introduction of digital tools and technologies.
  • Strengthened collaboration among key stakeholders in the road safety sector.

Crown Consult's expertise and commitment to road safety have played a crucial role in the success of this project. By leveraging advanced technologies and fostering collaborative partnerships, the project has paved the way for a safer and more sustainable transportation system in Qatar.
